the horror

Auschwitz - Birkenau

Auschwitz – Birkenau

Whole groups either deny it or even take a stance against it – neo nazis all around us trying to destroy civilization and a world that is shared equally. But luckily the biggest crowd being aware that we never want to go back to something like that. As one of the survivors stated during the 70 year remembrance ceremony: “that our past is not the future for our children”.

A few years ago I visited Auschwitz and Birkenau (actually Birkenau is the bigger camp and also called Auschwitz II). The first time me and my wife walked through the camp was already overpowering. But there were a lot of people, so that provided for some comfort. The only thing that was really awkward, was stopping and thinking out how to take the best photos. In the end I took some 50 pictures, but the awkwardness never disappeared.

Something made usĀ go back a day later, December 29th at 08:00 early morning, bitterly cold, being the first and only visitors. My wife stayed at the edge – wise woman – and I made the same walk as I had done before.

“Feeling lonely” does not cover it.

The horror … the horror!
